Church of the Beloved Disciple

Parish Cemetery

Also known as the "Gill Road Cemetery" and the "Old Catholic "Cemetery"

Fencing and plantings were installed the week before Memorial Day, May 26, 2008.

Over the years, various parishioners have taken care of the Gill Road Cemetery in Pine Township, where many of the founding families of Beloved Disciple are buried. In interim times, the condition of the cemetery deteriorated: Stones sank into the ground and became crooked or toppled over; the ground became uneven in many areas; and poison ivy had taken over many of the trees. What plants exist grew over due to lack of care.

Currently, parishioner Ed Hartle serves as the groundskeeper. He mows the grass on a regular basis, trims trees and shrubs, trims around stones and has cut down some trees that were completely overtaken with poison ivy. In 2006, his son, Eric, volunteered his time and resources to further fix up the cemetery as his Eagle Scout project. With the help of volunteers, they filled in some low spots with dirt and lifted and leveled off several stones with gravel. In July 2007, Ed and a few volunteers installed a vinyl fence along the front of the property.

However, there is still more work needed to be done. There are tentative plans to install a sign identifying the cemetery and to do some other cosmetic work, including planting ornamental trees and shrubs. The church possesses a small fund set aside for this purpose, but we still need some assistance before work can begin.

If you know someone who is buried in the cemetery and would like to give a donation in their memory to the cemetery fund, please mail donations to The Church of the Beloved Disciple, 1310 South Center Street Ext. , Grove City, PA 16127 clearly marked "for cemetery".   You may also call us at 724-748-6700 or e-mail the office at  patmos@zoominternet.net.

Also, if you are aware of an existing plot map of the cemetery, we are interested in obtaining a copy. We had thought of making our own, but some plots either have stones too weathered to read the names, or lack a stone altogether. Please e-mail the parish if you can either identify a plot or have access to some kind of a plot map.

Some visitors have taken it upon themselves to plant greenery, flowers, etc. It is fine to want to do this, but please e-mail if you wish to do so, so we are aware that it will be done and can advise you where to plant. We want the cemetery to be a beautiful, restful place to visit, but we also have to be able to maintain it in an accessible and time-efficient manner. Thank you!
